Wrexham Council warns against unlicensed taxis and that compliance checks are planned

As festive celebrations get underway, Wrexham Council and North Wales Police are reminding revellers to ensure the taxis they use are properly licensed and that compliance checks are planned.

The warning comes amid concerns that unlicensed vehicles and drivers may take advantage of partygoers looking for lifts home after a night out.

Sergeant Medwyn Williams of North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit emphasised the importance of safety when booking taxis this season. “We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time this Christmas. A key part of this is making sure you can get home safely.

“Always book your taxi through a reputable company. Licensed taxis display plates on the inside and outside of the vehicle. Avoid getting into unlicensed cars, which are often operated by individuals using their own vehicles. Not only do you not know the driver, but there’s also no guarantee the vehicle is safe or insured.”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Public Protection, confirmed that council enforcement officers will be working with North Wales Police to carry out spot checks throughout the festive period.

“Unlicensed taxis are not just illegal,” he said, “they’re uninsured and could leave passengers vulnerable. They also take income away from legitimate taxi operators. Always check for official taxi plates, illuminated roof signs on hackney carriages, and ID badges displayed by drivers.”

Wrexham Council advises passengers to look for white and purple licence plates on all taxis, and yellow adhesive signs in the windows of private hire vehicles. Hackney carriages will display an illuminated ‘TAXI’ roof sign. If you are in doubt, ask to see the driver’s official ID badge before starting your journey.

Authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant and avoid unlicensed operators to ensure a safe and hassle-free journey home this Christmas.
