TaxiPoint, the leading news source for the UK's taxi industry, recently conducted a quick fire survey asking taxi drivers if they were concerned about the emergence of 'Robo-taxis' in the country. The responses varied, with many drivers dismissing the technology at its current stage.
Vince Wood, a taxi driver, mentioned the use of Robo-taxis in San Francisco, indicating that the technology is already in practice in some parts of the world. However, Richard Dunkley had a different perspective, stating that someone still needs to own the vehicles and benefit from their work while they sit at home.
Timothy Wooding shared a somewhat amusing incident where a Robo-taxi got stuck in wet concrete, questioning the reliability and practicality of such vehicles in their current state.
On a lighter note, Nick Morris joked about having Robo-taxis on the ranks in Swansea on a Saturday night, emphasising the need for robust and adaptable technology that can handle challenging scenarios. Morris said, partly in jest: “I would love to see them on the ranks in Swansea on a Saturday night… Wolverhampton plated of course.”
Kevin Kulik highlighted concerns about road closures and diversions in his town, expressing skepticism about the ability of Robo-taxis to navigate such obstacles successfully. Kulik said: “Ha if they drive in my town they'll be looking for another job within a week. Roads always shut diversions here and there!”
Likewise, JP Duffy commented on the poor condition of current roads, suggesting that it might not be suitable for cars with drivers, let alone without drivers.
Interestingly, while many taxi drivers shared reservations about Robo-taxis, Ramon Dy expressed genuine worry regarding their introduction but did not elaborate further on specific concerns. Dy simply said: “I’m so worried.”
As discussions surrounding autonomous vehicles continue to gain traction, it remains clear that the idea of Robo-taxis in the UK evokes mixed reactions among taxi drivers. While some are dismissive based on current limitations and drawbacks, others are showing early concern for the future of their livelihoods.
