Wolverhampton’s Compliance Officers took a long trip to Hull on Friday, teaming up with Hull Licensing, Humberside Police, and the local Licensing Chair to conduct a targeted operation aimed at ensuring safety in the city’s private hire sector.

Photos shared on social media show officers in action, performing vehicle checks as part of a coordinated safety drive.

Wolverhampton deployed officers over 100 miles away in Hull due to cross-border licensing regulations that allow private hire drivers to operate across council boundaries.

Under current rules, drivers can be licensed in one area, such as Wolverhampton, and then work in another, creating challenges for local authorities trying to enforce safety and compliance standards.

The issue has sparked debate, with many arguing that cross-border drivers often operate without sufficient local oversight, potentially jeopardising passenger safety. Supporters of the current system, however, point to the increased flexibility and choice it affords both drivers and passengers.

While some local authorities are pressing for tighter controls or a nationwide licensing approach, cross-border hiring remains legal, requiring councils to collaborate on enforcement when out-of-town drivers operate in their jurisdictions.

A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said via social media: “Last night in Hull, Compliance Officers collaborated with Hull Licensing, their Chair of Licensing & Humberside Police to enhance public safety by conducting thorough vehicle checks, ensuring compliance and safety for all.”
