Wolverhampton Council private hire vehicles checked in Barnsley all pass compliance checks
City of Wolverhampton Council confirmed it participated in a joint operation with South Yorkshire Police and local councils on 14 December to inspect taxis and private hire vehicles in Barnsley.
The coordinated checks found four Wolverhampton-licensed vehicles, all of which were roadworthy and fully compliant.
The operation highlights a crucial aspect of taxi regulation known as “cross-border hiring”. Under current laws, drivers can be licensed in one council area but operate elsewhere. This means Wolverhampton-licensed vehicles can legally take bookings across different parts of the country, including South Yorkshire.
However, the system brings challenges. Licensing authorities are responsible for ensuring their drivers and vehicles meet safety and compliance standards, even when those vehicles operate outside their home area. Wolverhampton Council, which has become a significant licensing authority in recent years, must therefore conduct checks beyond its boundaries to fulfil its enforcement duties.
These cross-border operations are often carried out in partnership with local councils and police forces to ensure consistency and safety across regions. Wolverhampton Council’s participation ensures its licensed vehicles meet national standards, wherever they operate.
A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said: “Last night in Barnsley, Compliance teamed up with South Yorkshire Police, colleagues from Barnsley, Leeds and Sheffield Councils and conducted thorough vehicle/driver checks. 4 City of Wolverhampton Council vehicles checked and fully compliant and roadworthy.”
