Why do some taxi drivers take offence to passengers suggesting a preferred route?
Updated: Sep 19
It’s a familiar situation for some drivers and passengers: a rider steps into your taxi, states their destination, and then adds, “may I suggest a preferred route?” While many drivers will nod and follow the instructions without issue, others might seem hesitant or even slightly offended. So why is that?
Taxi drivers are highly trained professionals with an in-depth knowledge of the roads in the areas they cover. They know the best shortcuts, the quickest routes, and how to avoid traffic hotspots. This expertise is a large part of the service they offer, and for some, the suggestion of an alternative route can sometimes feel like a challenge to their knowledge and skill.
In some cases, it’s not just a matter of trust but also fairness. If the fare is fixed, and the passenger’s preferred route is significantly longer, the driver might feel concerned that the passenger is making a decision that could increase journey time unnecessarily. The driver might believe their suggested route would save both time and money. This can cause tension, particularly if the driver feels they are being taken on a route that’s longer and more costly to to the passenger… but drivers should remember that the customer is always right when it comes to metered preferred routes.
It’s also worth remembering that passengers are often well-informed about the route they suggest. Many regular taxi users take the same journey several times a week, often commuting to work or travelling to familiar places. In these cases, passengers may know more about current road conditions—such as roadworks or temporary traffic restrictions—than the driver does. In these instances, the passenger is simply trying to avoid potential delays and make the journey as efficient as possible.
For the majority of drivers, customer satisfaction comes first. Most will accept a suggested route without issue, recognising that the passenger may have a legitimate reason for the request. In fact, some drivers welcome input, as it can reduce the risk of misunderstandings and complaints. After all, the ultimate goal is to get the passenger to their destination as smoothly as possible.
Disagreements over route choices are rare and tend to arise only when the preferred route appears to add significantly to the journey in both time and distance. Yet, it’s clear that communication is key. A quick explanation from the passenger as to why they prefer a certain route can help prevent any confusion or offence, ensuring a smooth and pleasant experience for both parties.
