Valentine’s Day bonus proposed by union for Uber Eats and Deliveroo delivery riders to starve off threat of strike
Updated: 5 minutes ago
Last year on Valentine’s Day, delivery riders across the UK took a stand, boycotting major platforms such as Uber Eats and Deliveroo. The action, widely observed, was aimed at raising awareness of concerns around low earnings in an industry often pushed to its limits during peak demand periods. The boycotts highlighted the financial pressures riders face, particularly on days with significant order volumes.
In response to the potential for repeat action this year, the GMB union which represents many gig-economy delivery riders has now proposed a new initiative. They are urging Deliveroo and Uber Eats to recognise the vital role riders play during such high-pressure times. Specifically, they’ve suggested paying riders a bonus on Valentine’s Day, a day known for its high volume of food delivery orders.
The union says this bonus would acknowledge the extra contributions made by riders to meet heightened demand and maintain service standards on key dates.
The GMB has confirmed it is awaiting a response from both companies and will keep its members informed.
In a statement posted on the GMB noticeboard a spokesperson said: ”As many of you will know, last year on Valentine’s Day many riders participated in boycotts across multiple operators to highlight concerns about earnings.
“In light of this GMB has recently proposed to both Deliveroo and Uber Eats that they pay riders a bonus on Valentines’ Day to reflect the additional contribution they make to ensure that standards are met on days of particularly high importance and volume.
“We hope to have a response to our proposal soon and will share with members once we receive a reply.”
