A recent multi-agency taxi compliance operation in Leamington Spa highlighted the importance of cross-border checks for private hire vehicles and drivers.

The City of Wolverhampton Council, working in collaboration with the DVSA, Warwickshire Police, Warwick District Council, and Stratford-on-Avon District Council, conducted a coordinated enforcement exercise. According to a spokesperson for the council, the inspections found drivers were largely meeting their licensing conditions.

While the operation revealed high levels of compliance, police flagged one vehicle operating without valid road tax. Appropriate action was taken by authorities.

The operation is part of routine checks designed to ensure that vehicles and drivers operating outside their licensed areas adhere to safety and legal standards. Cross-border hiring rules allow private hire vehicles to pick up pre-booked passengers in areas outside their licensing authority, but drivers and vehicles must still comply with the conditions of their original licence.

Such inspections ensure that cross-border operations remain lawful and maintain public safety. Local councils, enforcement bodies, and police regularly cooperate in these efforts to uphold licensing standards and roadworthiness of vehicles operating across regions.

A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said on social media: “Taxi Compliance in Leamington Spa, joint working with DVSA, Warwickshire Police, Warwick Council and Stratford Council.

“Excellent level of compliance found with drivers adhering to their conditions. Police did however identify one vehicle with no road tax and action taken.“
