WeRide, a leading player in autonomous driving technology, is teaming up with Uber to introduce self-driving vehicles to the ride-hailing platform in the United Arab Emirates. The collaboration aims to bring WeRide’s autonomous fleet to the Uber app, starting in Abu Dhabi later this year.

This partnership will allow Uber customers in Abu Dhabi to book rides that may be fulfilled by WeRide's autonomous vehicles, marking a significant step in expanding the availability of driverless transport in the region. A specific number of WeRide cars will be integrated into Uber's system, offering a new, tech-driven choice to passengers. Currently, the agreement is limited to the UAE, with no plans for expansion to the United States or China.

WeRide already operates the largest robotaxi fleet in the UAE, accessible via the TXAI app. The company made further progress in July 2023, securing the first national licence for self-driving vehicles in the UAE. This licence allows WeRide to conduct trials and commercial operations on public roads across the country, setting the stage for broader adoption of autonomous driving technology in the region.

For Uber, this partnership is a step towards diversifying its platform with autonomous options while expanding its services in key international markets.

Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide, said: “We are honoured to partner with Uber to continue to bring our technology to global markets. Together, we aim to combine our collective experience and expertise to deliver much needed, affordable, sustainable and safe mobility solutions to a global audience.”

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, said: “Uber is very excited to partner with WeRide. It’s clear that the future of mobility will be increasingly shared, electric, and autonomous, and we look forward to working with leading AV companies like WeRide to help bring the benefits of autonomous technology to cities around the world.”
