Uber launches in Northampton amid rising local demand and ongoing expansion plans
Uber has expanded its services to Northampton, marking another step in its UK operations expansion.
The ride-hailing firm stated that the decision was driven by increasing local demand, with over 1,500 residents opening the Uber app and seeking to book trips every week.
This year, Uber has now secured licences in multiple cities and has seen its driver numbers surge by over 70% since 2021, with over 100,000 drivers nationwide.
Northampton residents and visitors were able to use the Uber app in Northampton via the now defunct ‘Local Cab’ option. The feature allowed anyone opening the Uber app to be connected with a local taxi or private hire operating firm, which in Northampton’s case was Amber Cars.
Uber terminated the Local Cab feature which tied in Autocab technology on 11 December 2023. Since then Uber has re-entered Local Cab regions like Hull and Stockton-on-Tees, signalling a strategic pivot in its UK operations following the end of its partnership with Autocab's iGo network.
Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, said: “We are extremely proud to launch Uber in Northampton, where we have been seeing increased demand for our services.
"By bringing Uber to the town, we want to help maximise earnings opportunities for drivers, boost transport options for passengers, and support the local economy.”
