Uber issues safety warning to drivers amid ongoing nationwide disturbances

Uber has issued a safety update to its drivers following troubling events across the UK over the weekend.

The ride-sharing giant is urging both drivers and passengers to adhere strictly to Uber’s Community Guidelines.

In its advisory, Uber stressed the importance of the driver and rider community in ensuring safe and respectful travel. Users are reminded to follow guidelines which include treating each other with respect and complying with the law.

The company is said to be ‘closely monitoring’ the situation in various cities and has provided specific recommendations for the upcoming days.

Users in immediate danger are advised to dial 999 or use the Safety icon in the Driver app to access emergency services. This feature shares vehicle and location details, which is particularly useful in unfamiliar areas.

Additionally, Uber advises against travelling to areas with high tension and potential unrest.

An Uber spokesperson told TaxiPoint: “The safety of everyone who uses the Uber platform is our top priority and we are closely monitoring the situation.”

The current disturbances in the UK have been primarily driven by a wave of protests and riots, triggered by the tragic stabbing of three children at a dance class in Southport on 29 July 2024. This incident was swiftly followed by a surge of misinformation and disinformation online, falsely linking the attack to an immigrant, which has exacerbated tensions and fuelled anti-immigrant sentiment across the country.

Riots and unrest have erupted in several cities, including Sunderland, Birmingham, Liverpool, Stoke and Manchester, resulting in arson, looting, and violent clashes with police. Notably, hotels housing migrants have been targeted, leading to widespread property damage and numerous arrests.
