TRENDS: What are the most popular methods used to grab a black taxi in London?

London’s iconic black cabs are a familiar sight on the city’s streets, offering a trusted and reliable service for residents and visitors alike. While the traditional image of a hand raised on a busy street remains synonymous with hailing a taxi, modern technology and booking methods have introduced more ways to secure a ride. Here’s how customers can get a black cab in the capital.

According to a recent Transport for London (TfL) report, hailing remains the most popular method of snaring a black cab, accounting for 20% of journeys in 2023. App-based bookings came in close behind at 17%. The report also noted a rise in weekly users, with 29% of passengers now claiming to use black cabs regularly—an increase of 6% from 2022.

Hailing from the Street

The most traditional and recognisable way to get a black cab is to hail one directly from the street. London’s licensed taxis are authorised to stop and pick up passengers anywhere a legal manoeuvre allows. To signal a cab, simply stand at the kerb and raise your hand when a taxi displaying its illuminated “For Hire” sign approaches. This method is quick, spontaneous, and ideal when you’re on the move and spot a cab nearby.

Taxi Ranks

Taxi ranks provide a structured and convenient way to access a black cab, particularly at major transport hubs. Found outside train stations, airports, and popular venues, ranks allow passengers to queue for a cab, often with marshals on hand to manage the flow. This system works well for those who prefer a guaranteed cab without having to search for a taxi on the street.

Taxi-Hailing Apps

In recent years, technology has transformed the way passengers book black cabs. Apps such as FREENOW and Gett enable users to hail a cab digitally, often providing benefits like upfront fare estimates, real-time tracking, and cashless payment options. These platforms are increasingly popular for those who want the flexibility of a traditional taxi but with the convenience of a mobile booking system.

Pre-Booking a Black Cab

For those planning ahead, pre-booking a black cab is another viable option. This can be done through an app or directly with a driver. Pre-booking is particularly useful for early morning or late-night journeys, where availability on the street might be limited. It also ensures a cab will be waiting at a specified location, offering peace of mind for time-sensitive trips such as airport transfers.

Black cabs hold a special place in London’s transport network, not only for their distinctive design but also for their reliability and professionalism. Licensed black cab drivers undergo extensive training, including mastering “The Knowledge”—a detailed understanding of London’s streets and landmarks. This expertise guarantees efficient and dependable service, whether you’re taking a short trip or navigating the city during peak hours.

As London continues to evolve, black cabs remain a trusted choice for getting around the capital. Whether passengers prefer the spontaneity of hailing from the street or the predictability of pre-booking via an app, the city’s licensed taxis offer a versatile and dependable option for any journey.
