TREAD CAREFULLY: UK drivers risk fines and collisions due to tyre neglect research reveals
Research from the RAC and charity TyreSafe reveals worrying trends in tyre maintenance among UK drivers, raising questions about road safety awareness. A lack of knowledge and attention to tyre condition is leaving motorists vulnerable to avoidable collisions and steep fines.
Only 39% of drivers know that the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm. This means 61% may be driving with illegal, unsafe tyres, risking a fine of £2,500 per tyre and three penalty points. While two-thirds of drivers claim to know the legal tread depth, 41% of that group gave incorrect answers when asked, showing a concerning gap in understanding.
Even more troubling is the lack of routine tyre checks. Just 33% of drivers check tread monthly, as recommended, while 26% only check sporadically or before an MOT. A further 5% admit they never check and rely on MOT failures to flag issues. Many who fail to check their tyres regularly say it “doesn’t cross their mind” (50%) or they rely on garages (40%)—despite this being infrequent for most.
When asked what might prompt better habits, nearly half (48%) suggested in-car reminders would encourage action. However, one-third (34%) said nothing would change their behaviour, with some believing tyre problems are unlikely to affect them, despite the RAC recording 340,000 tyre-related breakdowns in 2024.
Awareness of penalties is also low. Only 16% of drivers know fines can reach £2,500 per illegal tyre, and fewer than half (47%) are aware of the three-point penalty for dangerous tyres.
The findings align with earlier RAC data showing 19% of drivers delay repairs or servicing due to financial pressures, potentially compromising road safety. As the cost-of-living crisis bites, vehicle upkeep may fall further down the priority list, compounding risks on UK roads.
Motorists are urged to prioritise tyre maintenance, as neglecting it poses serious safety and financial consequences. Regular checks, an understanding of legal requirements, and timely action remain essential for safe driving.
