TRADITIONAL TO MODERN: How dispatch technology is helping to power the taxi and private hire industry shift

Perry Richardson

The taxi and private hire industry has been undergoing a major shift. Traditional operators are facing increasing competition from app-based ride-hailing giants. To stay competitive, many firms have turned to advanced dispatch systems like iCabbi and Autocab to keep up with the pace of the modern world.

These platforms provide the technology needed to automate bookings, streamline dispatch, and improve overall efficiency. They allow taxi and private hire firms to compete with larger companies by offering app-based bookings, real-time tracking, and cashless payments.

At the core of these systems is automated dispatch. This technology assigns jobs to drivers based on location, availability, and operator-set preferences. It ensures faster response times and reduces empty mileage, helping drivers maximise their earnings.

Booking options have also expanded. Passengers can now book rides through branded apps, online portals, and automated phone systems. Some platforms integrate AI-driven call handling, reducing the need for manual call centre staff.

Fleet management tools give operators full oversight of their drivers. They can monitor shift patterns, ensure compliance with licensing rules, and track key performance data. Driver apps provide navigation, earnings summaries, and job updates in real time.

Payment processing has also evolved. Many platforms now support in-app payments, corporate accounts, and secure pay-by-link options. By offering multiple payment methods, taxi firms can cater to a wider customer base.

Some dispatch providers are introducing networked taxi models to provide nationwide coverage. iCabbi’s Taxi Alliance, for example, allows firms to network jobs with other operators outside of their operating coverage.

AI-driven data insights are also improving the way firms operate. Analytics tools help operators predict demand, adjust pricing, and identify high-traffic areas. This allows for better driver deployment and increased profitability.

White-label ride-hailing solutions have given taxi firms a way to compete directly with big brands like Uber and Bolt. These branded apps offer the same features customers expect, including live tracking, estimated arrival times, and loyalty rewards.
