A new fundraising campaign led by the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans has been launched to secure ongoing support for the shrinking number of World War II veterans.

The campaign is being driven by charity ambassador Johnny Gallagher and 100-year-old veteran Dorothea Barron. It follows renewed media interest in the lack of state support for surviving WWII veterans. With many of these individuals now in their 90s and beyond, the charity is stepping up its efforts to provide meaningful assistance.

The Taxi Charity, established in 1948, is run by volunteer London taxi drivers and supporters. It arranges regular trips and events that honour the service of veterans, including visits to Normandy and the Netherlands, as well as UK-based social gatherings and memorial visits.

These outings offer more than transport. They provide vital opportunities for friendship and recognition among veterans, helping to reduce isolation and ensure their stories are not forgotten.

Johnny Gallagher and Dorothea Barron hope the latest campaign will encourage the public to contribute towards the continuation of these efforts. As the number of WWII veterans continues to decline, the charity says it is more important than ever to preserve the legacy of those who served.

As the 80th anniversary of VE Day approaches, Johnny and Dorothea are calling on the public to donate to the ‘Our Heroes Fund’.

Johnny Gallagher said: “Many of these men and women made unimaginable sacrifices during the war. They’ve served their country and been left behind in peacetime. The least we can do is honour their remaining years with the respect, care, and gratitude they’re owed. For far too long veterans have been let down or left in limbo until last minute about whether or not they will receive funding for events and trips.

“Me and Dorothea Barron my oldest best friend are raising money so her and the last of our heroes will never have to worry about paying respects to their fallen friends again. The goal is to raise a £1m before VE Day on the 8th May 2025, just a few weeks away. I know it is ambitious but I believe in the Great British public and I know we can do it.”

Colin Mills, London Cab driver and Chairman of the Taxi Charity said: "We are deeply moved by the unwavering support from individuals like Johnny. Our WWII heroes deserve unwavering support. That should never be in question. With this fund, we will be able to continue to support our veterans without the  constant worry about whether we will have the funds we need.”
