The shocking moment an e-scooter rider speeds through a red light and straight across oncoming vehicles has been captured on dashcam and shared on social media.

The footage, which was recorded by a London based driving instructor, shows the rider of an electric scooter travelling along a pavement moments before moving into the road just before a set of red lights.

The rider can then be seen zooming through the red stop light, straight into the very busy junction in Mitcham south London, and across oncoming traffic, narrowly missing the flow of cars.

Sharing the footage on Facebook, Nurudeen Ali, said: “The electric scooters are hard to see and hard to hear.”

New legislation has allowed companies and local authorities to start a 12-month trial, offering road-legal e-scooters for hire.

There are some strict rules applied to the hire service, such as a person must be 16 years of age or over, and hold a valid provisional driving licence. Helmets are not mandatory but are recommended.

A £300 fixed penalty notice, as well as 6 penalty points can be issued to anyone caught breaking the law.
