THE RULES EXPLAINED: Smoking and E-Cigarettes ban in London taxi and private hire vehicles
Transport for London (TfL) has reiterated the strict ban on smoking in licensed taxis and private hire vehicles via social media, which also includes the use of e-cigarettes. This policy is part of a wider effort to ensure public and workplace health across the capital’s transport network.
Smoking, in any form, is prohibited in almost all enclosed public places and workplaces. The same applies to licensed vehicles, regardless of whether they are in service. Drivers and passengers are equally bound by this restriction. Even when the vehicle is not in use for hire or reward, the rules remain in force.
All licensed vehicles must display the required no-smoking signage. Failure to comply can result in a £50 fixed penalty notice. If the case is taken to court, fines can increase to a maximum of £200 upon conviction.
The regulation also extends to e-cigarettes and vape sticks. TfL includes these devices under its broader no-smoking policy, aligning with restrictions already in place across rail, underground, and bus services. This ensures consistency across public and private transport modes.
Drivers and passengers are reminded to adhere to these rules to avoid penalties and to maintain a clean and professional transport service across London.
