The road sign that a whopping 83% of UK drivers struggle to recognise

Perry Richardson

A new survey has exposed a worrying lack of knowledge among UK drivers when it comes to key road signs.

The findings reveal that 63% of motorists could not correctly identify a “No Stopping” sign, while 73% failed to recognise a “No Waiting” sign. Alarmingly, 83% did not know what a “No Vehicle” sign meant.

This lack of awareness could have serious consequences. Misunderstanding these signs can lead to fines, penalty points, and even vehicle removal if a car is left in a restricted area.

Ignoring a “No Stopping” sign can result in a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of up to £130, depending on the location. Similarly, failing to follow a “No Waiting” sign could lead to fines and penalty points if a vehicle is deemed to be causing an obstruction.

In cases where a car is parked illegally, authorities have the power to issue a removal notice. If the vehicle is not moved within the specified time, it may be towed, with additional recovery fees applied.

With such a high percentage of drivers unaware of these signs, the findings raise concerns about road safety and the need for better education on the Highway Code.

Claire Wills-Mckissick, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, said: “Many drivers struggle to recognise important road signs, which can lead to fines and penalties. Parking or stopping in restricted areas may not only disrupt traffic but also create safety hazards.

“Staying informed about road signs and their rules is essential for avoiding these risks and ensuring safer roads for everyone.”
