TfL urges taxi and PHV drivers to stay safe amid heatwave

Perry Richardson

Transport for London (TfL) has issued a reminder to all taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers in the wake of the ongoing heatwave in London. Emphasising the importance of driver and passenger safety, TfL is urging drivers to take necessary precautions and protect themselves during the scorching weather.

A spokesperson for TfL highlighted that higher temperatures are expected this week and advised drivers to prioritise their well-being. The spokesperson recommended several key points to ensure drivers cope with the heatwave effectively: regular breaks, adequate hydration, and maintaining a well-functioning vehicle.

"With temperatures set to rise in London, it is crucial for all drivers to take regular breaks to rest and cool down," stated the TfL spokesperson.

"Carrying plenty of water is essential, and drivers should ensure their vehicles are in good working order. Checking oil and water levels and ensuring tires are properly inflated can help prevent any unforeseen issues while on the road."

The announcement serves as a timely reminder for drivers to prioritise their health during extended periods of high temperatures. Heat exhaustion and dehydration can have detrimental effects on drivers' concentration and physical well-being, thereby increasing the risk of accidents.

TfL's spokesperson also encouraged passengers to be mindful of the weather conditions and take necessary precautions while travelling. "If you are planning to travel, please be cautious, stay safe, and keep hydrated," the spokesperson added.
