Transport for London (TfL) is updating the “Blue Book”, the essential guide for aspiring taxi drivers, as part of efforts to modernise the Knowledge of London.
The revised guide will reflect recent changes to the assessment process, providing clearer guidance for candidates. Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan confirmed the update in response to a question from London Assembly Member Elly Baker about making the Knowledge more accessible while maintaining its high standards.
Baker asked: “What plans, if any, do you have to modernise the Knowledge of London, ensuring it remains the gold standard whilst making it more accessible and appealing to a new generation of drivers?”
TfL recently published a list of 6,000 Points of Interest that examiners will use for assessments. This move aims to make the process more transparent, ensuring candidates know exactly what they will be tested on. The full list is available on TfL’s website.
Beyond these changes, TfL is working with Knowledge schools and stakeholders to raise awareness of taxi driving as a career, particularly among under-represented groups.
These steps are part of TfL’s commitment to keeping the Knowledge relevant and ensuring London’s taxi industry continues to attract new drivers.
The Mayor of London, said: “As committed to in my previous response, Transport for London (TfL) has recently published a list of 6,000 Points of Interest on its website that candidates can be asked in their assessments. Examiners will only ever ask points that are on this list.
“This is a part of TfL’s ongoing efforts to make sure that the Knowledge process remains fair and transparent whilst ensuring it maintains the Gold Standard.
“TfL is also in the process of updating the Guide to Learning the Knowledge of London for candidates (also known as the “Blue Book”) to reflect these changes, and will continue to work with Knowledge schools to provide support to prospective taxi drivers.
“TfL will continue to work with stakeholders as appropriate to raise awareness of taxi driving as a career choice, particularly amongst under-represented groups.”
