TFL TAXI RULES: Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers MUST report ‘police involvement’ within 48 hours or risk licensing action
Updated: 11 minutes ago
Transport for London (TfL) introduced updated requirements for licensed taxi drivers, private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers, and PHV operators in the summer just gone.
From 1 July 2024, individuals in these roles must report any interaction with the police, including arrests, charges, cautions, convictions, and penalty notices, within 48 hours.
The rules cover all driving offences that result in penalty points on a DVLA driving licence. If a fixed penalty notice (FPN) is issued, drivers are required to notify TfL within 48 hours of paying the associated fine.
To comply, drivers and operators must provide the following details:
Full name and date of birth
Licence number
Description of the offence
Date of arrest, charge, caution, or conviction
Police station details (if applicable)
Court details and any sentencing information (if applicable).
TfL has introduced an online form for submitting this information, though email submissions are also accepted. Further details are available in TfL’s “Notification of Police Involvement” guidance document.
Implementation Timeline
For licensed taxi drivers, the 48-hour notification rule will take effect immediately from 1 July 2024. PHV drivers granted licences on or after this date will have the requirement included as a condition of their licence.
Drivers with licences issued before 1 July 2024 were not initially bound by the condition but were strongly encouraged to adhere to the rule. The requirement will be added when these drivers renew their licences. For those linked to PHV operator licences, the rules will apply immediately from 1 July 2024.
TfL’s move aims to enhance safety and accountability within the industry. Operators and drivers are advised to familiarise themselves with the updated requirements to avoid potential licensing issues.
