TECH-SAVVY CABBIES: What devices and applications are taxi drivers using?

In an ultra competitive market, taxi drivers have become more tech-savvy than ever, harnessing an array of devices and applications to streamline their business operations on the move and become one step ahead of the competition.

But what technology can we expect to see cabbies using?

Taxi Booking Apps

Today's cabbies are supplementing traditional street hails with bookings from taxi apps. These apps, accessed via smartphones or tablets mounted on the dashboard, allow drivers to receive and manage bookings seamlessly. Hackney carriage drivers will choose how often and when to use apps to broaden their customer base but also enhance efficiency.

Navigation Tools

When it comes to navigation, drivers have a plethora of options. Some stick with separate sat nav units, while others rely on apps like Google Maps or Waze. These tools help check locations and current traffic status. For highly trained cabbies, many routes are second nature, with navigation apps used primarily for real-time traffic updates or less familiar destinations outside of their usual working area.

Card Payments

The shift towards cashless transactions is evident. More drivers now offer card payments through handheld devices linked to their smartphones. In regions where card payment terminals are mandatory, these devices are typically fixed within the passenger compartment. A small tablet in the driver’s cabin often facilitates fare processing, ensuring a smooth transaction experience.

Receipt Printers

For areas where card payments are mandatory, a receipt printer is often required. This ensures that passengers receive a printed proof of payment, aligning with regulatory standards.

Dashcams and CCTV

Safety is paramount, leading many drivers to install dashcams and in-car CCTV systems. These devices provide valuable footage in case of incidents, enhancing security for both drivers and passengers.

WiFi Services

To improve passenger comfort, some taxi drivers offer WiFi. This is either through dongles in USB charging points or by using their smart devices as hotspots. Such offerings can cater to the needs of tech-reliant passengers, adding an extra layer of convenience and that extra possibility of a tip!

Modern taxi drivers are leveraging technology to enhance their service delivery. From booking and navigation apps to card payment systems and in-car WiFi, the integration of these tools is redefining the taxi experience.
