Taxis and private hire vehicles checked in Pre-Christmas North Yorkshire Police safety operation
North Yorkshire Police conducted a comprehensive safety operation in Harrogate to inspect the condition of taxis and private hire vehicles ahead of the festive season.
The operation, which took place on Friday 13 December 2024, revealed several issues among the vehicles inspected. One taxi was taken off the road entirely due to significant safety concerns. Four others were issued with immediate or general prohibitions, restricting their use until faults were addressed.
Additionally, eight vehicles were flagged for defects requiring action or advisory notices. The issues identified included problems with tyres, lighting systems, and engine management.
Police emphasised the importance of maintaining roadworthy standards, particularly during the busy Christmas period, when public reliance on taxis and private hire services is heightened. The operation demonstrates a commitment to passenger safety and vehicle compliance across the region.
PC Dave Ellison from the Roads Policing Group said: “I am grateful to the partner agencies in this operation which included taxi licensing enforcement teams from both North Yorkshire Council and Bradford Council, as well as the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency).
“We want to do all we can to ensure that taxis and private hire vehicles in the city are operating safely and legally.
“Thankfully, most people act on this advice, and I ask that all taxi drivers ensure that their vehicles are maintained, remain fit for purpose and are road legal.”
Cllr Greg White, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for managing the environment, added: "It is imperative that customers feel safe when using a taxi or private hire. Operations such as this show that not only are we taking this issue seriously, but they should also act as a reminder for the trade to ensure their vehicles are road worthy."
