Taxi driver alerts police to sleeping passenger carrying alarming KITCHEN KNIFE

A routine taxi journey in Stapleford took a surprising turn when police were called to deal with a sleeping passenger found carrying a kitchen knife.

Lewis Thompson was fast asleep in the back of a taxi when the driver spotted the weapon and alerted authorities.

Officers arrived at Rossell Drive around 7.15pm Sunday 13 October. A visible knife on the backseat prompted one officer to reach through an open window to secure the blade without disturbing Thompson.

Once the weapon was removed, police woke Thompson and quickly removed him from the vehicle. He responded by assaulting officers and directing verbal abuse at them.

Further searches revealed Thompson was carrying cannabis, and a background check showed he was wanted in connection with an assault that occurred on 29 June in Nottingham city centre, where he punched a man, causing facial injuries.

Thompson was charged with multiple offences, including possessing a knife in a public place, assaulting an emergency worker, resisting arrest, and drug possession.

He pleaded guilty to all charges during his appearance at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 15 October. He remains in custody and is set to be sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 26 November.

Sergeant James King, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “It’s fair to say Thompson wasn’t too impressed about being woken up by police and placed under arrest.

“The violence and aggression he demonstrated while this was taking place was completely unacceptable – as was his decision to be carrying a knife that night.

“There is absolutely no excuse for anyone to ever carry a kitchen knife out in public, as Thompson was doing, for the obvious reason that it puts people in danger.

“The taxi driver did the right thing by calling the police when they saw he had a weapon.

“It also turned out that Thompson was responsible for carrying out an assault a few months earlier, so this proved to be a great result all-round.

“We’re pleased to see he’s owned up to his actions and look forward to seeing what sentence is handed down to him by the court.”
