Taxi checks lead to suspensions in multi-agency operation in West Yorkshire

Taxi drivers in Shipley faced scrutiny yesterday as part of a joint enforcement operation targeting vehicle safety and licence compliance.
Officers from Shipley Neighbourhood Policing Team, working with the Steerside Enforcement Team, DVLA, Bradford Council’s Hackney Carriage Licensing team and West Yorkshire Police Specials, carried out spot checks throughout the day.
As a result of the operation, five taxi licences were suspended due to vehicle defects and issues such as missing or incorrect signage. A large number of taxis were found to be operating within legal requirements, but officers focused attention on those failing to meet licensing and safety standards.
Three vehicles were seized for having no insurance. Traffic offence reports were issued for seatbelt violations, mobile phone use while driving, and serious tyre defects, including visible cord exposure.
One scaffolding van was also stopped and prohibited from moving until part of its load was removed. It was found to be exceeding the legal weight limit.
The checks formed part of a wider effort to ensure licensed vehicles and their drivers are safe, legal and properly authorised to operate. Enforcement officers said the operation will form part of an ongoing approach to compliance in the area.
