TAX HELP: The 5 most common reasons for calling the HMRC helpline



HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has revealed the top reasons why individuals are calling the Self Assessment helpline and is encouraging taxpayers to use online services to resolve these issues more efficiently.


The most frequent enquiry involves taxpayers checking if they are still required to file a Self Assessment return. However, HMRC reminds the public that such information is readily available online via GOV.UK. Users can check their status and inform HMRC if they no longer need to submit a return, avoiding unnecessary calls to advisers.

The other leading reasons for calls include registering for Self Assessment, querying the need to complete a return, and seeking updates on repayments or registration status.


With over 12 million taxpayers required to file Self Assessment returns for the 2023-24 tax year by 31 January 2025, HMRC is pushing for the use of its online resources. These include a range of tools and guides to streamline the process, allowing taxpayers to file early and avoid last-minute complications.


New filers are reminded they need to register to receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference before submitting their return. Those earning income outside of PAYE, such as self-employed individuals, business partners, or those receiving untaxed income, may also need to file.

HMRC continues to offer webchat and helpline services, but its priority is for taxpayers to use digital solutions where possible, providing faster access to the information they need.
