Dozens of Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licences were suspended or revoked over the past three months in Huntingdonshire, with major vehicle defects and medical non-compliance among the most common causes.
A report presented to the Licensing and Protection Committee on 5 June 2025 revealed that from March to May this year, a total of 37 enforcement actions were taken against drivers, vehicles and operators. Of these, 27 were immediate vehicle suspensions. Most were triggered by test failures due to major or dangerous defects, including broken coil springs and accident damage.
Nine drivers had their licences suspended or revoked. Medical reasons played a significant part, with several drivers receiving 21-day suspensions for overdue medical checks or failing to provide required documents. In two cases, drivers were refused renewals on the basis they were not deemed fit and proper to hold a licence. Complaints from the public also contributed to revocations.
The report also noted the removal of one operator and highlighted the increasing use of the council’s penalty points system. Introduced in 2024, the system enables licensing officers to record incidents without immediately suspending a licence. It has already been used in a number of cases, including for failure to declare DVLA offences, aggressive behaviour towards the public, and serious vehicle faults.
Officers confirmed there are no outstanding licensing cases pending a court date. In one earlier case, a court upheld the council’s decision to refuse a new driver licence.
The Licensing and Protection Committee was asked to review and note the enforcement summary.
