Super slick illegal tyre found on private hire vehicle during Edinburgh police checks
During a routine road safety check in Edinburgh, Scotland’s National Motorcycle Unit uncovered a concerning defect on a licensed private hire vehicle.
Officers identified a severely worn tyre deeming the vehicle unsafe for use. As a result, it was immediately prohibited from operating.
UK law mandates that vehicle tyres must maintain a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s width and around the entire circumference. Tyres falling below this standard pose a significant risk to road safety, reducing grip and increasing the likelihood of accidents, especially in wet conditions.
The driver of the vehicle received a fixed penalty notice, incurring three points on their licence and a £100 fine.
Authorities stressed that such checks play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of passengers and other road users alike.
A Scotland Roads Policing spokesperson said: “During a road safety check on Private Hire /Taxis in Edinburgh, officers from the National Motorcycle Unit noted this defect on a private hire vehicle.
“The vehicle was prohibited from being used. Checks such as these help keep passengers and other road users safe.”
