Storm Darragh: Taxi drivers and motorists urged to take extra care as drivers brace for storm

Taxi driver and motorists across the UK are being urged to take extra care on the roads this weekend as Storm Darragh sweeps in, bringing torrential rain and winds of up to 80mph.

The Met Office has issued warnings, advising people to avoid unnecessary travel. For those who must drive, preparation and caution are essential to ensure safety.

Statistics reveal a worrying trend: one in three drivers admit to exceeding speed limits in poor conditions, while a similar number fail to adjust their speed during wet weather. These behaviours can have serious consequences, as stopping distances on wet roads are at least twice as long as those in dry conditions, according to The Highway Code.

The recommended two-second gap between vehicles in dry weather should be doubled or even tripled in the wet. This allows drivers ample time to react and stop safely if needed.

Flooded roads present another significant hazard. Driving through standing water can lead to loss of control and vehicle damage, often not covered by insurance. The advice from insurers like Quotezone.co.uk is simple: turn around and find an alternative route.

Strong winds add further challenges. Drivers should maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel and remain alert, particularly when passing exposed areas such as gaps in trees or buildings where side winds can be more forceful.

Vehicle readiness is just as important as driving technique. Key checks before setting off include ensuring tyres have adequate tread and are correctly inflated, windscreen wipers are functioning properly, and brakes and batteries are fully operational. Drivers should also ensure the correct lights are in use, as failing to activate appropriate lights in poor visibility is illegal and could result in a hefty fine or even a driving ban.

Understanding which lights to use in varying weather conditions is crucial. Use dipped headlights in heavy rain or dull daytime weather, and activate fog lights when visibility is severely reduced. Many vehicles have automatic lights, but these should be checked manually as they may not activate in all conditions, particularly fog.

Greg Wilson, car insurance expert and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk said: “With heavy rainfall and strong winds expected across the country, we’re urging drivers to take a proactive approach to safety.

“Before getting behind the wheel it’s crucial to carry out a few checks to ensure your vehicle is in top condition. Checking tyre pressure, tread depth, lights, and wipers can make a significant difference in how your car handles adverse weather.

“Many motorists underestimate the impact of weather on driving conditions and failing to adapt your driving style to the conditions can have serious consequences.

“It’s important to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and be vigilant for potential hazards like flooding and debris.

“Drivers should also check what type of insurance they have - while most comprehensive car insurance policies cover storm damage, motorists who have taken out third-party only or third-party, fire and theft insurance won’t normally be covered.

“Also, drivers who actively drive through flood water are likely to invalidate their insurance and lose protection for any damage – given it was an avoidable situation, and the driver has a duty to safeguard the vehicle.”
