Steering Wheel Spinners to Blind Spot Mirrors: A taxi driver’s guide to several black cab gadgets
In a recent video, London taxi driver and content creator Tom Hutley shared his hands-on experience with a variety of car gadgets designed to enhance a cabbie's comfort and efficiency.
Hutley, known for his engaging YouTube channel Tom the TaxiPoint Driver, shares insights into the life of a professional taxi driver. His videos often explore a range of topics, including driving tips, reviews of gadgets and equipment, and reflections on the challenges and perks of being a taxi driver in one of the world’s busiest cities.
In his latest offering, he tests items from memory foam cushions to blind spot mirrors, aimed at making life on the road smoother for professional drivers and commuters alike.
One gadget was a memory foam car seat cushion. While it offered noticeable comfort during long shifts, Tom noted that it lacked the support of standard seats, particularly for lumbar and side cradling. Tom also tested elbow and neck cushions.
Perhaps the most intriguing gadget was the spinner knob, a nostalgic throwback offering precise control for parking and low-speed manoeuvres. Tom likened it to fulfilling a childhood dream, although he admitted its practicality might be limited to specific situations rather than everyday use.
For productivity, Tom explored a laptop steering wheel tray. This device allows drivers to work efficiently while waiting at ranks. Although useful for quick tasks like emails, it required careful adjustment of the seat and steering wheel for the best fit.
For meal breaks, Tom demonstrated a 12-volt heated lunchbox. Other gadgets, such as blind spot mirrors and car seat gap fillers, addressed common frustrations like limited visibility and lost items. In contrast, sun visors and retractable charging stations received mixed reviews.
