Taxi passengers across South Gloucestershire are now paying more after a 2.55% increase in Hackney Carriage fares was approved by the council. The new rates took effect on Tuesday 1 April 2025.
The fare rise follows the council’s annual review and was confirmed at a meeting of the Regulatory Committee in late March. The increase applies to maximum tariffs for Hackney Carriage journeys and reflects rising vehicle running costs.
According to the council’s report, the average daytime fare for a two-mile journey has risen from £7.85 to £8.00. No objections were raised during the statutory public consultation period.
The review considered recent changes in fuel prices, which on average fell by 1.7% since the previous year, and also took into account inflation and wider economic pressures. Officers noted that the new fare levels place South Gloucestershire among the higher fare rates nationally, although this position may change as other councils update their tariffs.
An Equality Impact Assessment highlighted that all users would be affected by the increase, with a greater impact expected on disabled people, women, and older residents. However, the council noted the rise remains below the consumer price index rate of inflation and does not affect private hire fares.
South Gloucestershire Council confirmed the new fares aim to balance public affordability with maintaining a viable taxi service, particularly in rural areas with limited public transport alternatives.
