Sinn Féin’s transport spokesperson Brady demands action to protect Ireland’s taxi industry

Sinn Féin’s Transport Spokesperson, John Brady, has voiced support for measures to protect Ireland’s taxi industry amid rising costs, safety concerns, and threats to drivers’ livelihoods.

The call comes as industry representatives warn of growing challenges for drivers, who are struggling to stay afloat under the weight of spiralling expenses and inadequate protections.

Brady criticised the Government’s inaction, highlighting the essential role taxi drivers play, particularly in rural areas where public transport is limited. He emphasised the importance of preventing further attrition in driver numbers, pointing out the current shortage of taxis across the state.

He pledged Sinn Féin’s support for the industry, urging meaningful engagement with stakeholders to develop practical solutions to the issues drivers face. Brady pinpointed the reliance many communities have on taxis, particularly in areas where alternative transport options are sparse.

Brady said: “Taxi drivers across the state are facing huge challenges. The Government has done nothing to address the issues that the industry is facing. It is imperative that the voice of ordinary taxi drivers is heard on the challenges they are being forced to confront.

“There is a shortage of Taxis in the state, we can ill afford to have drivers leaving the industry in droves. Which is what will happen if nothing is done.

“Sinn Féin supports Taxi drivers, we understand the vital role that the industry plays within our communities. There are many people, particularly in rural Ireland, where public transport can be sparse, who are dependent on Taxis for transport.

“I and my party are backing calls by industry leaders for greater levels of engagement to produce practical measures that will address the threats that the Taxi industry faces.”
