A private hire driver licensed with Sefton Council has been caught illegally plying for hire in Liverpool City Centre.

The driver was caught in the act by Liverpool City Council Licensing officers during a night of enforcement checks.

The unnamed driver will now face prosecution for the offence and will also be reported to their licensing authority to see whether they are still deemed fit-and-proper to hold a private hire licence.

All private hire journeys must be booked in advance, making it illegal to pick up a fare if not.

Only hackney carriage taxis can legally accept a fare which has been hailed roadside.

Highlighting the find via their official Twitter account, Liverpool City Council Licensing (@lcc_licensing) said: "Licensing officers on duty in the city centre inspecting licensed vehicles this evening.

"In addition, a Sefton PHV driver was caught plying for hire and will be reported for the offence of no insurance."
