The temporary venue is designed to celebrate Uber’s progress in reducing air pollution in the capital, with 55,000 tonnes saved since 2021 through its electrification initiatives.

The 55k Tonnes pub will showcase various energy-generating technologies, such as Pavegen flooring, which turns footsteps into electricity, and power bikes that let visitors generate energy while enjoying a pint. It’s a hands-on demonstration of how renewable energy solutions can fit into everyday settings.

Uber’s electrification journey has transformed London into its global electric vehicle hub, with nearly 30% of Uber miles driven by electric cars. The company’s Uber Green option, launched in 2021, offers the same fare as an UberX, while also giving drivers a 10% earnings boost on each journey.

The name ‘55k Tonnes’ draws inspiration from traditional British ‘tun’ pubs, referencing the old English term for a beer barrel. Inside, the pub serves carbon-neutral beers, including Swell by Gipsy Hill Brewing, and runs a “carbon-conscious” happy hour starting at 5.50 pm, offering £5.50 drinks. The pub’s guests are encouraged to skip rush hour, and discounted Uber Green rides are on offer to get home safely and sustainably.

Patrons will receive a 55% discount on Uber Green journeys for each sustainable brew bought.

The 55k Tonnes pub will be open from 1pm to 10.30pm on 7th and 9th October, offering Londoners a chance to experience the city’s first carbon-negative pub at 46 Great Peter St, SW1P 2HA. This initiative comes just ahead of Uber’s second global climate event, GO-GET Zero, which aims to accelerate the drive towards zero emissions.

Andrew Brem, General Manager at Uber UK, said: “In the UK pubs are where we exchange ideas and opinions, and what better way to promote a dialogue on electrification in the UK than with a carbon-negative pub. The opening of The 55k Tonnes in Westminster showcases Uber’s commitment to sustainability in London and beyond.”
