A new electric TX4 black taxi retrofit could quickly transform regions who have relatively small numbers of licensed taxis in their area says experts.

Clipper Automotive, a tech start-up firm that specialises in electric vehicle (EV) conversions, are trying to bring a fleet of converted black taxis to the market that could cost drivers just £230 a week to rent.

The unique retrofit solution is one of many that could be scaled up as the taxi industry seeks cost effective interim solutions to quickly convert more of its current fleet into more environmentally friendly taxis.

The firm behind the technology, Clipper Automotive, was set up by two experts in their field, Dr Alexander Howard and Janosch Oppermann. Their aim has always been to turn diesel black taxis into Zero Emission Capable (ZEC) vehicles.

Representatives from Clipper Automotive recently met with licensing officials from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to showcase the electric TX4. In this region there are only 43 licensed taxis.

A spokesperson from Clipper Automotive said via social media: “We met with the Licencing and Transport teams at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to showcase the electric TX4.

“We had positive reviews from the council and good interest from the drivers when we stopped off at the rapid charger at the train station. With a relatively small Hackney Carriage fleet in Basingstoke, Clipper Automotive could quickly make a complete change to its carbon footprint.”
