RAC data reveals drivers paying over £600 a year in surprise car repairs

Perry Richardson

New figures from the RAC show drivers are forking out an average of £617 each year on unexpected vehicle repairs, with tyres, brakes and suspension parts among the most frequent causes of unplanned bills.

Nearly six in 10 drivers are hit with surprise repair costs annually, and over a third of those admit they struggle to cover the expense. The research, which includes cars of all ages, found tyres are the biggest issue, affecting 64% of drivers. Brake repairs came next at 24%, with 21% forced to pay for new suspension parts—rising to 30% for cars aged between three and 10 years.

Other common unexpected expenses include new exterior lights, bodywork repairs, and replacing 12-volt batteries.

The RAC has expanded its services to meet growing demand, with its Mobile Mechanics division now handling many of these issues directly at customers’ homes or workplaces. In 2024, aside from full and interim services, electronic diagnostics were the most requested service, followed by brake work and battery-related repairs.

Paul Coward, chief executive of the RAC’s service, maintenance and repair arm, said the ability to handle more repairs outside of traditional garages was helping reduce disruption for motorists. The system allows a vehicle to be towed home and then fixed at a time that suits the owner, without needing to visit a garage.

Repairs can also be paid for in instalments using Klarna, and bookings can be made online, with customers receiving fixed-price quotes in advance.

Coward added that regular servicing remains essential in keeping repair bills down. Addressing MOT advisories before they worsen can help avoid breakdowns and higher costs later on.
