A private hire vehicle stopped in Islington, North London, by the Metropolitan Roads & Transport Policing Team, was found to have a badly damaged illegal tyre.

The tyre, pictured by the enforcement team, shows it has exposed cords on the inside edge.

The legal limit for tyres is 1.6mm, which this one was clearly way below.

Posting on their official Twitter account @MPSRTPC, a spokesperson for the force, said: "Taxi & Private Hire Team 3 stopped this vehicle with a dangerous defect today in Islington.

"Before starting your shift make sure you inspect your vehicle.

"Our officers are out every day making London's T&PH safer for everyone."

Incidents like this usually require the tyre to be changed immediately on the roadside and the driver to be reported, fined and issued with penalty points on their licence.

A taxi or private hire driver may also be reported to their respective licensing authority for the offence.
