Private hire drivers across the UK are planning a coordinated log-off protest on 1 May 2025, in what organisers hope will be the largest action yet against working conditions in the sector.
The action, scheduled to take place on International Workers Day, follows a similar mass log-off on 14 February that saw drivers in cities across the country stop working to demand better treatment. Companies such as Uber, Bolt and FREENOW were targeted.
The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), which supports the campaign, says drivers are taking a stand against low pay, unfair algorithm-based management, and a lack of basic protections. According to the group, February’s event was the largest coordinated driver action in UK private hire history.
Drivers in London, Newcastle, the Midlands, Cardiff and Brighton have already pledged to take part in the May protest. There is also support from drivers in the United States, who plan to carry out their own log-off in solidarity.
The union is encouraging drivers to join a dedicated WhatsApp group to organise locally and share updates. A QR code and contact number have been provided to help drivers get involved.
