Private hire vehicles were the focus of a joint enforcement operation carried out on Halifax Road, Huddersfield, on Thursday 8 May. The checks led to immediate suspensions, defect notices, and further regulatory action.
West Yorkshire Police officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) joined forces with the DVSA, DVLA and local taxi licensing officials to inspect 23 private hire vehicles. Two vehicles were suspended on the spot due to safety concerns, preventing them from operating until repairs are completed. Another two were issued rectification sheets after failing to meet licensing standards.
Away from the private hire vehicle checks, the team also dealt with a number of plate-related issues. Four vehicles received Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme (VDRS) notices for problems with registration plates, and four drivers were given advice after being found using non-compliant plates bought online.
The wider operation saw multiple vehicles stopped for a range of checks. A stolen Ford C-Max, reported missing from Doncaster in November 2024, was recovered.
Officers issued five VDRS notices for other defects, one Traffic Offence Report (TOR), and one immediate prohibition notice, which prevents the vehicle from being driven away. Four delayed prohibition notices were also given, allowing a short period to address issues. Two vehicles were identified with defective airbags, and further investigation was launched into a HGV operator’s licence.
The operation formed part of ongoing work to improve road safety and ensure licensed vehicles meet required standards.
