Police start serious investigations into 'Facebook taxis'
Updated: Jun 5, 2023
Police in the Channel Islands have launched a crackdown on unlicensed taxi rides organised through Facebook groups. The practice, known as 'Facebook taxis', involves people offering or requesting lifts for a fee on social media platforms.
According to ITV News Channel, the police say they are concerned about the safety of passengers and drivers, as well as the impact on the licensed taxi industry. They warn that anyone caught providing or using such services could face prosecution and fines.
The police say they have received several complaints from licensed taxi drivers and members of the public about the 'Facebook taxis'. They also say they have evidence of people using fake names and profiles to offer or request rides.
The police urge anyone who needs a taxi to use a licensed and regulated service, such as Island Taxis Guernsey, which is the largest taxi and coach provider on the island of Guernsey. They also advise people to report any suspicious activity or incidents involving 'Facebook taxis' to them.
Guernsey Police said: "The majority of drivers offering Facebook taxis are also not licensed, so even if they are providing the lift with good intentions, if there was an accident, there would be no insurance cover.
"We can never know what the intentions of a stranger are and getting into a stranger’s car, particularly after enjoying a night in town, can leave you vulnerable."
