A petition calling for a cap on private hire vehicle numbers in Edinburgh has gained over 800 signatures as concerns grow among drivers about falling earnings and rising competition.
Titled “Cap Number of Private Hire Vehicles in Edinburgh so everyone can make a living”, the petition has been launched by an anonymous individual identifying only as a “Worried Driver”. The petition argues that the growing number of private hire vehicles is pushing down earnings and threatening the livelihoods of both taxi and private hire drivers in the city.
According to the petition, the number of private hire vehicles operating in Edinburgh has grown by more than 30% in recent years. This rise has increased competition for fares, making it harder for drivers to generate a steady income.
The petition highlights that Edinburgh Council holds the power to regulate the number of private hire licences issued. It calls for a cap to be introduced in line with measures already in place in other cities, where limits have been used to help balance supply and demand.
Supporters of the petition believe that a cap would help stabilise earnings for drivers, reduce congestion, and limit environmental impact. The petitioner claims that the move would make the profession more sustainable for those currently working in it.
The petition remains open on change.org, with the organiser urging more people to sign and show their support for change.
