Police and council officers in Nantwich have carried out joint inspections on taxis operating across Cheshire East to ensure drivers and vehicles are complying with regulations.
The activity formed part of Operation Withdraw, a targeted effort to protect the public by inspecting both local and out-of-area taxis. The checks took place between Friday 4 and Saturday 5 April.
Led by the Nantwich Beat Team and supported by the Crewe Local Policing Unit, Cheshire East Council, the Roads and Crime Unit, Streetsafe and the Special Constabulary, the operation focused on key locations including Crewe Railway Station. The station sees high traffic from taxis registered both within and outside Cheshire East.
While it is legal for out-of-area taxis to operate in the borough, officers say it creates difficulties for local authorities attempting to carry out regular safety checks. Without access to proper oversight, there is a risk that unsafe or unsuitable vehicles go unnoticed.
During the two-day operation, over 100 taxis were stopped and inspected. Officers looked at vehicle safety features including lights, the presence of in-car CCTV where required, and whether drivers had appropriate ID.
The effort extended across towns between Nantwich and Macclesfield, with police aiming to increase their visibility and send a message to unlicensed or non-compliant drivers.
Authorities say the operation also served to engage with legitimate drivers, reinforcing the importance of following local licencing and safety standards.
Sergeant Matthew Stonier, of Crewe Local Policing Unit, said:"Operation Withdraw was launched by the Nantwich Beat Team along with local partners including taxi licensing officers for Cheshire East, in order to combat unlicensed passenger vehicles.
"The aim of the operation is to provide reassurance to those using taxis in Crewe, that they are safe to use and road worthy with enforcement action being taken where appropriate. It was really reassuring to see that so many of the taxis that operate in our area were compliant with the appropriate legislation.
"Our officers will continue to support the legitimate taxi drivers in Cheshire East and ensure those enjoying a day out here can return home safely."
