New local DfT Transport Minister ‘seems a positive appointment’ says taxi reps
Simon Lightwood MP has taken on the role of Local Transport Minister, a key position with oversight of licensed taxis and private hire vehicles.
As a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Transport, Lightwood's appointment brings new leadership to an important sector looking to undergo major change.
The Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association (LTDA) has responded positively to the news. An LTDA spokesperson noted that Lightwood previously engaged with London’s licensed taxi trade during his time as shadow local transport minister. While the long-term impact of a Labour government on the trade remains unknown, this appointment is seen as a promising development.
Lightwood’s history of engagement and support suggests a more constructive approach towards the challenges facing the sector. Challenges like cross border hire and national standards look set for greater debate in the near future.
A Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association (LTDA) spokesperson said in TAXI Newspaper: “Lightwood previously held the shadow local transport brief and prior to the General Election he had positively engaged with London’s licensed taxi trade and been supportive on a number of issues. It remains to be seen what a Labour government will mean, if anything, for London’s licensed taxi trade but this seems like a positive appointment.”
