MP’s table Early Day Motion calling for greater protections for Uber and private hire vehicle drivers

A recent Early Day Motion (EDM) tabled in Parliament has highlighted the need for stronger protections for Uber and private hire drivers across the UK.

The motion, tabled on 12 September 2024, has gained the support of six MPs and focuses on addressing the ongoing challenges faced by drivers in the gig economy.

The EDM emphasises the essential role these drivers play in the UK’s transportation system, but also draws attention to the precarious nature of their working conditions.

It raises concerns about issues such as insufficient pay, the risk of algorithmic bias, and a lack of employment rights, including holiday pay and sick leave.

The motion references the Taylor Review of Modern Working Practices, which recommended urgent reforms to better protect workers in the gig economy. It urges the Government to act by implementing measures that would ensure fair treatment and adequate compensation for these drivers, who often find themselves in vulnerable employment situations.

EDMs, like this one, are formal motions submitted by MPs to draw attention to specific issues. While they rarely lead to direct legislative change, they serve as a tool to raise awareness and spark debate in Parliament. This particular EDM calls on companies like Uber to comply with UK employment laws, as reinforced by the Supreme Court ruling, and to treat drivers with the ‘respect they deserve’.

The motion also stresses the need for companies to eliminate any algorithmic discrimination, a growing concern in the industry. By urging Uber and others to follow employment regulations and treat drivers fairly, the EDM adds its voice to ongoing discussions about improving working conditions for those in the gig economy.
