Modernising Welsh Taxi and Private Hire Licensing: First Minister commits to reform in sector

Updated: Jul 15

Vaughan Gething, the Welsh First Minister, addressed the Senedd this week with a clear commitment to overhauling the taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) licensing system.

Gething highlighted the Welsh Government's aim to establish a safer and fairer industry through modernisation.

In his statement, Gething announced plans to consult on a draft taxi and PHV Bill within the current Senedd term. This initiative aims to involve all stakeholders, including passengers, the trade, and licensing authorities, to ensure comprehensive reforms.

He highlighted the Government's intention to pursue improvements through both legislative and non-legislative routes.

Gething also mentioned his personal connections, declaring an interest in the company Veezu and his membership in the Unite and GMB trade unions. This transparency aims to maintain trust and integrity in the reform process.

The proposed changes signify a significant step towards better regulation and safety standards in the Welsh taxi and PHV sector. As the consultation process unfolds, it will be crucial to monitor the feedback from all involved parties to shape a robust and effective licensing framework.

Vaughan Gething, the Welsh First Minister, said in the Senedd: “We are committed to modernising taxi and private hire vehicle licensing to create a safer and fairer sector.

“So, we will consult on a draft taxi and private hire vehicles Bill this Senedd term, and we will continue to work with passengers, the trade and licensing authorities to take forward reforms through non-legislative means.

“Members may wish to note a declaration of interest concerning the company Veezu, in addition to my membership of the Unite and GMB trade unions.”
