Mid Sussex taxi drivers take a step closer to mandatory card payment acceptance

Perry Richardson

Card payments will soon be mandatory for all licensed taxis and private hire vehicles in Mid Sussex, marking a significant change to the district’s Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy.

This policy shift, designed to improve passenger safety and convenience, follows extensive public consultation and feedback on the Department for Transport’s revised Best Practice Guidance.

The council’s decision comes after numerous complaints from passengers unable to pay by card, particularly during late hours. Such incidents have raised safety concerns, especially for those who find themselves stranded without cash. Under the revised policy, all licensed drivers will now be required to carry card payment facilities.

Although many drivers already accept card payments, some still refuse to process electronic transactions for local journeys, even when equipped to do so. This inconsistent practice has added urgency to the council’s intervention, ensuring passengers can reliably use card payments across the district.

The taxi trade has expressed concerns about this move, citing transaction costs, equipment fees, and potential cash flow delays. However, the council has clarified that these considerations are outweighed by the need to safeguard public access to essential transport services. Drivers operating in areas with limited mobile network coverage will be required to address such challenges to comply with the mandate.

This policy update aligns with broader trends, as card payments now dominate consumer transactions across the UK. It aims to standardise payment options while supporting the council’s commitment to public safety and accessibility.

The new requirement is not an outright ban on cash but ensures passengers have the option to pay electronically. Drivers are encouraged to prepare for these changes as the council works toward full implementation.
