Greater Manchester Police, working with Wolverhampton taxi licensing officials, continued their series of taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) safety checks across the region.

The operation, which took place last night, identified vehicle defects serious enough to take two vehicles off the road.

An image shared by police highlighted the extent of the safety concerns, showing one private hire vehicle operating without a crucial locking wheel bolt on its wheel.

Cross-border licensing checks are an essential part of ensuring taxi and private hire vehicles meet the safety standards required by law. With drivers often operating in areas outside their original licensing authority, such inspections aim to identify unfit vehicles and protect the public.

By collaborating with licensing authorities like Wolverhampton, police can carry out robust inspections to hold operators accountable.

A Greater Manchester Police Traffic spokesperson said: “Earlier tonight GMP CVU were working in partnership with staff from Wolverhampton taxi licencing, conducting numerous checks across the force area.

“Whilst most of these checks were all in order, 2 taxis stopped were removed from service due to vehicle defects.”
