A man has been jailed for life after being found guilty of murdering taxi driver Mark Ward in Dundee.
Steven Greig, aged 47, was convicted at the High Court in Dundee on Wednesday 29 January 2025. He was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on Thursday 10 April 2025.
The court heard that Greig carried out a serious assault on Mr Ward, 55, on Couper Angus Road on Wednesday 6 April 2022. Mr Ward, who was working as a taxi driver at the time, was taken to hospital following the incident. He died from his injuries nearly a year later, on Wednesday 5 April 2023.
Initially charged with assault to severe injury, Greig was later convicted of murder. He must now serve a minimum of 16 years before being eligible for parole.
Greig’s sentencing brings a conclusion to a case that spanned nearly three years from the date of the assault to the final ruling.
Detective Inspector Craig Kelly described the incident as a violent and unprovoked attack, adding that Ward had simply been carrying out his job on the day he was assaulted.
Kelly said: “Mark Ward endured a violent and unprovoked attack as he was going about a normal working day. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends who have also suffered immensely because of Greig’s brutal actions. We hope his sentencing today will bring them some form of comfort.
“Thankfully crimes like these are extremely rare in our communities. When such incidents take place, we will use every resource at our disposal to ensure we track down those responsible and bring them to justice.”
