Lucky escape as delivery van suddenly turns, slamming into London cyclist

A London cyclist has amazingly escaped serious injury after a Tesco delivery driver suddenly turned across a bike lane causing the rider to slam into the side of the vehicle.

The astonishing footage was caught on another cyclist’s helmet-cam who was riding close behind.

The victim of this sudden manoeuvre can be seen cycling along a bike lane on a section of the capital’s Thames embankment, when a Tesco delivery van can be seen driving up alongside.

At this point all seemed perfectly normal, but without any warning, the driver of the van sharply turns left, cutting across the cycle lane at the exact moment the rider was approaching.

Unable to brake in time, the cyclist slams into the side of the van and goes crashing to the floor.

Sharing the video across social media, PC Harry Rance, said: “Just a reminder that a bit of different coloured paint isn't going to protect you from incompetent drivers...Plan for the worst and remember the road is a shared environment.”

The dangerous turn sparked debate on social media over why the driver steered so sharply, with the most popular answer being that he wasn’t concentrating and at the last moment realised he was about to miss his turning.
