Londoners BACKING black cabs as value for money and vital service, new report reveals

Perry Richardson

London’s black cabs remain a valued and trusted part of the city’s transport system, with strong public support for their reliability, safety, and unique heritage, so say Londoners.

A new report by Centre for London highlights how Londoners continue to recognise the importance of black cabs, with many viewing them as good value for money.

The report, supported by FREENOW, reveals that Londoners still see black cabs as a premium service that delivers convenience, experience, and safety. A significant 42% of those surveyed said convenience was the biggest benefit of taking a black cab, while 41% valued the drivers’ expert knowledge of the capital’s streets.

Comfort and safety also rank highly, with 39% of passengers citing the quality of the ride and 36% saying they feel more secure in a black cab compared to other transport options.

Despite changes in the transport market, nearly half of Londoners (49%) believe black cabs offer good or very good value for money. While some acknowledge fares can be higher than other options, they see this as a reflection of the quality and reliability that black cabs provide.

With set fares regulated by Transport for London (TfL), passengers benefit from price transparency, avoiding surge pricing often found with app-based services. This consistency remains a key factor in why many Londoners continue to choose black cabs, particularly for essential journeys.

Black cabs have been part of London’s identity for generations, and the public believes they will remain a key part of the capital’s future. An overwhelming 78% of those surveyed said they expect black cabs to still be on the road in 100 years, demonstrating the lasting appeal of the trade.

While the industry has faced challenges in recent years, from rising costs to increased competition, the report highlights that the trade is adapting. The shift to zero-emission capable vehicles, digital booking options, and ongoing discussions about modernising driver training all point towards a trade that is evolving while maintaining its high standards.

Centre for London, an independent think tank, conducted the research to provide insight into the state of the trade and inform future transport policy. With input from industry leaders, policymakers, and drivers, the report reflects both the challenges and opportunities ahead.
