London's taxi drivers have been granted access to the Shorter Street bus lane near Tower Bridge, offering a significant boost to their efficiency and service.
In late 2023, the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association (LTDA) announced future bus lane access, including those on Pentonville Road, Shorter Street at Tower Hill, and around the O2. These planned changes aimed to cut travel time and simplify routes for both drivers and passengers.
The activation of the Shorter Street bus lane for taxis is seen as a major benefit. Previously, cabbies navigating from the City towards the West End or Westminster had to endure the congested Dock Street or Trinity Square exits. The new access via Shorter Street offers a more direct and less congested route.
This move is likely to enhance the efficiency of London's transport network. By opening up the bus lanes to licensed taxis, cabbies will be able to reduce travel time, lower costs for passengers, and decrease overall congestion on the roads.
The changes are not limited to Shorter Street. Whilst there has been no time placed on access to the Pentonville Road contraflow bus lane, taxi access will streamline travel in a critical area of North London. Similarly, the bus lanes around the O2 will provide significant benefits to drivers and passengers heading to and from this major entertainment hub.
A taxi driver recently shared an image on social media of the updated signage at Shorter Street, indicating that taxis, along with motorcycles, buses, and bikes, can now use this lane. This visual confirmation has been well-received by the taxi trade, who see it as a step forward in recognising the vital role taxis play in the city's transport infrastructure.
